In certain rural regions of India, baby tossing has been occurring for over 700 years. This ritual consists of dropping an infant 50 feet above the ground and catching the baby in a white sheet. It is believed that baby tossing will increase the baby’s intelligence, luck, and health. This ritual began during a time of high infant mortality rates. It is said that a saint told people with ill babies to drop their babies from a high place to show their devoted trust to God. These babies were said to have been immediately cured of their illnesses. Since then, it has been common for parents to ask God for healthy children by promising to participate in the baby tossing practice. Most Indians today find this ritual to be extreme and may even want to have the ritual banned as it can cause severe trauma and injuries to the baby. The ritual was first practiced at a time where there were no medical advancements to treat babies with illnesses so It was used as the sole way to heal babies. However, I believe with the medical advancements made in the recent past, this ritual is no longer needed.
